Mineral Refractories
Our Hillsborough deposit located in the “Piedmont” of North Carolina has been producing consistent ore since it opened in 1958. A unique mix of the mineral andalusite and massive grain pyrophyllite increases the heat resistance of the natural combination raising the melting point. The purity of this pyrophyllite ore makes it an excellent source for alumina and silica in high temperature formulations. Piedmont Minerals has been a staple raw material producer in refractory mixes and many other ceramic applications. Our product is shipped by bag, super sack, pneumatic tanker truck, and railcar.
Refractory Minerals
The Hillsborough deposit located in the “Piedmont” of North Carolina has been producing consistent ore since it opened in 1958. Classification and blending at the mine allow for versatile chemical and mineralogical classes of products. Our product families contain: Alkatrol©, Andafrac©, Pyrofrac©, Pyrophyl©, Pyrotrol©.
Piedmont Minerals Pyrophyllite is available in both the crushed/screened and milled style designed for common brick and ceramic applications. Resco Products also offers CM95-35 a crushed and screened dead burned magnesite. Several milled grades are available, as are crushed and screened grains. All grades are available in bulk, super sacks, and in 50lb bags.
Types of Pyrophyllite Refractory Minerals
Pyrotrol 2253 - Is a milled, low iron, 200 mesh pyrophyllite. Also available n pallet quantities from our Cedar Heights Clay facility in Oak Hill, Ohio. It is also available in less than pallet quantities from these distributors; L&R Specialties, Laguna Clay Company, Dakota Potter's Supply, and Kentucky Mudwords. Can help control fired shrinkage and fired toughness as a partial replacement for silica in ceramic bodies.
Alkatrol 20031 - Is a milled low iron pyrophyllite that also contains foliated sericite which raises the alkali level. Traditionally used to control shrinkage and thermal expansion in ceramic tile bodies. It is also an excellent base material for white coatings in the brick industry.
Pyrofrac 0204 - A crushed and screened minus 20 mesh pyrophyllite grain. Available with a portion of fines removed.
